Jesus Last Words - Day 3

Updated: Apr 22

In John 19:26–27, we see a sweet moment Jesus has with His mother in His last moments.

Imagine the emotions of these last hours for Him and for her.

Mary is as close as she can to her beloved Son.

The depth of pain and sorrow she must have been feeling, and Jesus seeing His mother there, we feel His heart as well - His deep love and concern for His her.

“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, He said to her,

‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.”

Sometimes reading the Bible can feel like reading a history book- names, dates, wars, etc. -

But is that all the Bible is?

A history book?

No - it is so much more.

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” Hebrews 4:12.

God’s living Word should not be something we simply read or listen to passively and then move on and forget.

In the book of James we are told to look “intently into the perfect law that gives freedom” and to focus on it by doing what it says James 1:23–25.

So what do we see here?

Jesus heart was broken for His mother.

Amidst his pain He saw her pain.

He wasn’t focused on Himself,

He was concerned about His mother and wanted to make sure she knew she would be cared for.

Jesus’ love for his mother is the love we are to have for our parents. At the feet of her Son (and Savior) Mary suffers and Jesus meets her need making sure she is loved and cared for. Jesus calls on John to care of her knowing he would love Mary as his own mother.

How beautiful is the love of God!

He not only sees our pain, but He enters into it, experienced it, and provides healing and meets us where we are at.

From the cross we see that Jesus
“heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

The Cross offers many things to us -

First and foremost - peace with God -

But it also offers family - we are adopted into His family, other followers of Jesus become our brothers and sisters in Christ, and God can bring healing and reconciliation within your own family.
