What does forsaken mean?"
To renounce or entirely turn away from. When Jesus was on the cross, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 –
So, as Jesus took on our sin – God could not look upon Jesus –
because God the Father is holy He could not look upon sin and this was seen as temporarily forsaking Christ at the cross - so He had to turn His back on Jesus.
Indeed - this could be the cry of the humanity of Jesus as well -Up to this point - everyone else had forsaken Him; His beloved disciples, His followers, and now Jesus feeling the absence of the Father feeling forsaken Him but He never abandoned by His Father.
If you read Psalm 22 - you will see the fulfillment of this prophecy of Jesus being forsaken and crucified at the cross of Calvary.
Jesus was on the cross for about six hours, three of those in total darkness. Before Jesus cried out to God on why he had forsaken him.
The Bible tells us that it was noon which means that it was midday, and darkness covered the whole land for three hours till the ninth hour.
There are so many things we can take away from reading God's word -
We hear the agony in Jesus' words -"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Yet God promises us that He never will forsake us -“I will never leave you nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5b.
God also told Joshua “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you” Joshua 1:5.
The promise we have from God for “those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you” Psalm 9:10
