“I thirst”
When you think of that phrase, what feelings or sensations come to mind?
Extreme dehydration?
A deep sense of emptiness?
A need that must be met - now!
On the Cross we see Jesus full display of very human and vulnerable feelings. His humanness brought to the lowest point a body could endure - and we hear Him cry out “l thirst.”
While His body is on full display for all to look upon, spit upon, and mock.
What do you thirst for? When Jesus said, “I thirst,”
He was referring back to the prophecy in Psalm 22:15: “My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.”
This also fulfilled the prophecy of Psalm 69:21: “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.”
Jesus had refused earlier to take a drink- but then - as death was closing in - Jesus takes one final sip to quench His thirst and wet His lips - to speak clearly and powerfully - “IT IS FINISHED.”
Today- is Good Friday -“It is finished” indeed -Jesus has paid in the full the penalty of sin-“God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin."
People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time.
God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus” Romans 3:25–26.
Do you thirst for something more?
Peace?
Love?
Forgiveness?
Jesus is the living water-
John 7:37, "On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.”
John 4:14, “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Isaiah 58:11, “Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”
